Grade 8 Boys Basketball

¨Our kids love to play, now it´s just about teaching them the right way to play¨ says Aman Virk, Head Coach of the Grade 8 Boys Basketball team at Eugene Reimer. Over the years, the basketball program at Eugene Reimer has experienced a considerable amount of success, including a recent trip to the Provincial Championships in 2015. This year’s team was no different, as the Grade 8 Boys finished third in a highly competitive league including teams from Mission and Abbotsford.

Head Coach Aman Virk says that the Reimer boys really prided themselves on playing “team” basketball. “We had several key contributors this year, but you never knew who it was going to be on any given night” says Virk. All season long, dominant offensive performances were provided by Krishi Sharma, Jaskarn Bajwa, Haman Grewal, Kavan Kahlon, who often found themselves scoring in the high 20’s every game. Reimer’s “run and gun” style offense mimicked that of the Phoenix Suns of the early 2000’s when they were coached by Mike D’Antoni. On the defensive end, Saurav Sandhu, Harvey Brar, Anoop Sandhu, and Gavin Garcha were often called upon to guard the best players of opposing teams, and to anchor Reimer’s suffocating full court press.

The Ravens won two tournament championships at the Robert Bateman Classic in Abbotsford, and the Vikes Classic in Kamloops, and went into the postseason as the 7th seed at the Fraser Valley Championships. “There are 32 teams that qualify for the Fraser Valley Tournament, and Abbotsford had 4 teams in the top 8¨ says Virk, “That tells you that we are living in the hotbed of basketball here in Abbotsford”. Come February, the Ravens found themselves narrowly missing an opportunity to qualify for the wildcard berth at this year´s BC Grade 8 Provincial Championships and ended up finishing 7th at the Fraser Valley Championships. Coach Aman Virk says that Reimer is on track for building a powerhouse basketball program, and the success of this year’s squad is only the beginning.
