Improving Student Learning

The Abbotsford School District’s Strategic Plan reflects our public commitment to BC’s new curriculum by working together to continuously improve learning for each student.

School Goals

Under the Framework for Enhancing Student Learning, all Abbotsford School District schools are required to develop a long term plan to improve student achievement, one that maintains a balance on the intellectual, social and career development of students. Each year, each school develops an annual plan and sets individual goals to improve student achievement.

Eugene Reimer Middle School Goals

Eugene Reimer Middle School (ERMS) is a diverse learning community empowering the whole person toward individual success, community involvement and global citizenship. 

We are inspired by our namesake, Eugene Reimer himself, as well as our mascot, the Raven, to set goals every year and try our hardest to accomplish them.

Our mascot is the North American Raven. A bird that is a member of the crow family. The raven is known for its competitiveness, intelligence, mastery, adaptability, and ability to cooperate. We feel many of these qualities are ones Eugene Reimer students should strive to accomplish.

What are the Primary School Colours?

Our school colours are black, silver, red and white. Black represents the predominant colour of the North American raven. Silver represents the lining of a cloud where a raven flies. The "silver lining" provides comfort, protection, and an inspiration for the future.

Red and White represent two important ideals: 1) The colour of the Canadian Flag, the flag and country which Eugene Reimer represented so well, winning over 50 national and 22 international medals over his 22 year athletic career. 2) The Colours of BC Disability Sports which represent perseverance, strength, ability, dedication, and an opportunity to achieve.

Intellectual

Our students will learn key academic skills - like reading, writing and math - to encompass the knowledge and processes associated with intellectual development. As learners and meaning-makers, students take subject-specific concepts and content and transform them into a new understanding. 

Our celebrations of learning

At Eugene Reimer we aim to educate the whole child. By concentrating on all aspects of learning (academic, physical, and fine arts) we focus on all areas of the adolescent learner. 

As part of our student achievement department we explicitly teach academic vocabulary (included is a Punjabi version)

Human & Social

Our students will study personal and human social skills and as they relate to students' identity in the world - both as individuals and as members of their community. We are learning that personal and human social skills encompass the abilities students needs to thrive as individuals, to understand and care about themselves and others, and to find and achieve their purposes in the world. 

Our celebrations of learning

The Hallmark of Eugene Reimer is our participation in the Abbotsford City of Character movement. Eugene Reimer, one of the longest standing member of the City of Character, we live the 6 traits of Character every day.

Each year we choose one trait for a focus: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Empathy, Courage and Service.

By involving many different community members in the project we have broken down myths about our community. For the 2017/2018 school year we are focussing on the character trait of integrity. We hope that you will be able to join us and learn together.

Careers

Our students will succeed in a much different future from the one we envisioned 10 or 15 years ago. It is our responsibility to prepare all children for success in whatever life path they choose, connecting learning opportunities with future career possibilities. We know that real-life experiences - like community involvement, gaining business knowledge, and hands-on-learning - build better students and life-long citizens. 

Our celebrations of learning

Eugene Reimer has focused on 2 key aspects of Career Development. 

We have chosen to use the lense of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) as a way to embrace a hands on learning approach to education. A unique feature to Eugene Reimer is that EVERY student has to opportunity to learn about the design cycle and coding. Whether it be the use of Littlebits, Spheros, or Vex & Lego Mindstorms Robotics every student at Eugene Reimer will have expereince for the ever changing job market that is continually focussed on technological innovaitons.

A second focus for careers is our famous Young Entrepeneur Fair. Every year the  Grade 7 students from Eugene Reimer Middle School participate in the Young Entrepreneur Fair on Tuesday, selling products they had designed, manufactured and marketed.

Artistic canvases, pop-culture toys and trinkets, fragrant stress balls and striking string art were sold to peers and staff.

Students learned skills in project management, manufacturing, customer service and marketing. At the conclusion students donate 10 per cent of their profits to BC Children’s Hospital and the Abbotsford Food Bank.

This Young Entrepreneur Fair was another illustration of the way Eugene Reimer Middle, a school of character, is exemplifying social responsibility.
